Arlo Antique French Oil Jug
Two looped lugs and a small pouring spout crown the shoulder of this French oil jug, the treacle-brown glaze pooling thick and glossy where the potter let it run before giving way to bare, corded clay across the belly. Jugs like this were made for walnut oil, the great crop of the Périgord, and the partial glaze was entirely practical: enough to seal the vessel where it mattered, and raw earthenware everywhere else to keep the oil cool and out of the light, which is what stopped it turning. The lugs took a cord so the pot could be carried or lashed shut, and the throwing rings ribbed into the lower half are the potter's own hand, still legible two hundred years on.
