Bryony Antique Fruitwood Coffee Table
Warmer in colour than most fruitwood of this age, this top has kept a stunning soft red brown where the timber usually weathers to grey. Long splits run the length of the boards and have been left open, which is what a century and a half of drying does to timber cut this thick.
It spent its first life under a grinding stone, and it has never been a true circle: the edge swells and flattens as the boards run out, so we take the measurement at the widest point. That is 141cm, a big table by any reckoning.
The base is squared timber, four legs and low stretchers, set well inside the rim and handsomely plain under all that figure.
