This piece is unusually tall for a coffee table, meaning it could be used as a low console or hallway bench as well. Its top is a single plank of elm, a stunning piece of timber worn pale and smooth over eighty years or so, with splits opening along the grain. This one has a shake at one end held by two iron staples, an old repair that has clearly done its job.

The legs are round and splayed, braced low down with stretchers, and the elm has been left dry and unsealed. At 50cm the top stands well above coffee table height, which is what makes it useful at the end of a bed or pulled up alongside a sofa.

Care Instructions

Dust with a dry cloth. Avoid water and household cleaners, which will mark the surface. Keep away from direct heat and strong sunlight, and expect a little movement in very dry rooms.
