It is made from solid elm sourced in Shanxi province and is around a hundred and thirty years old, the surface mellowed to a soft weathered grey over more than a century of use. The long top is ideal for a run of lamps, framed pictures and the small things that gather in a hallway, and the old elm grain — knots, splits and all — gives it the kind of character that newly made furniture can never quite reach.
