Sophie Antique Chinese Terracotta Wine Jar

  • £115.00

A quietly beautiful thing: a full-bellied Chinese wine jar drawn up to a narrow waisted neck and finished with a wide collared rim, thrown in one piece from iron-rich red clay and left entirely unglazed. Vessels like this held rice and grain wine in rural Chinese households, and the collar isn't decorative, it gave something to tie a cloth or stopper against, and something for a hand to grip when the jar was full and heavy. Every rotation of the wheel is still visible in the faint horizontal banding across the body, and the surface has that dry, chalky bloom that only comes to unglazed earthenware after a very long time. It needs nothing beside it.
