Thaddeus Reclaimed Dining Table - 383cm
Every so often a piece arrives that we know we will not see again. This is one of them.
The top of this large oak dining table is a single plank cut from one tree and left much as it was found, with the original edge and the grain running unbroken from end to end.
Timber of this width and length is genuinely rare. Oaks old enough and straight enough to yield a board of these proportions are rarely felled now, and rarer still are the mills prepared to convert one into a single top rather than jointing several narrower boards together. Almost every large dining table you will find is made from three or four planks glued edge to edge. This is one plank.
It stands on just two solid oak plinth legs. That is only possible because of what sits beneath: a series of iron supports running across the width of the table at intervals, bracing the plank and holding it absolutely true.
The engineering is invisible from above and from any normal seated position, but it is the reason a table this long needs no central leg and no stretcher. Nothing interrupts the space underneath. Twelve people can be seated in genuine comfort, and every one of them has room to sit properly.
At close to four metres, this is a table for a large space. A farmhouse kitchen, a barn conversion, a dining hall. It seats twelve comfortably on individual dining chairs and even more if you choose benches.
The oak has been finished to let the timber speak for itself. Knots, shakes and natural figuring are all present as intended.
