Coffee Tables

Antique, vintage and reclaimed wood coffee tables, in elm, oak and other old timbers, each with its own grain, colour and marks of use. Some are old pieces, most of them carefully restored, others are newly made from reclaimed timber, and every one is a single piece rather than a range. You'll find coffee tables on show in our Moreton-in-Marsh shop, where you can see the timber up close.

Choosing a wooden coffee table

Antique, vintage or reclaimed?

An antique or vintage coffee table is an old piece. Most have been restored in a way that keeps the wear of their years, and a few are left just as we found them. A reclaimed coffee table is newly made from old timber, so it has the character of aged wood with a sound, new frame. Where we know a piece's age, its product page says so. Elm brings a wild, open grain and a range of tones from honey to grey brown; oak tends to be straighter and more even.

What size do you need?

A coffee table about two thirds the length of your sofa usually looks right. Keep the top level with the sofa seat or a little lower, and leave around 45cm between the two, enough to reach the table from your seat and still walk past. In a large room, or between two sofas, a big rustic coffee table can anchor the whole seating area.

Shape and use

A rectangular table suits a long sofa; a square or round one sits well between armchairs or in front of a corner sofa. A long, low bench can work as a coffee table too, and many of ours do both jobs. Look for a shelf or a drawer underneath if you want somewhere to keep things off the top.

Looking after it

Dust with a dry cloth and use coasters under anything hot or wet. Avoid household cleaners and water, which will mark the surface. Old timber can move slightly in a very dry, centrally heated room; that's normal for solid wood.

See them in person

Coffee tables are always on show in our shop on the High Street in Moreton-in-Marsh. If one on the website catches your eye, tell us before you visit and we can have it in the shop for you.
